Mutau Flat
Date: November 2, 2025
Description: Mutau Flat is the Chumash pictograph site with red, orange, white, black, and yellow pigments,
Some images are easy to interpret and represent animals of the forests, rivers, and deserts. A
few are anthropomorphic images (human-like) that might represent members of the spirit
world, and still others are strange abstract designs.
Location: Mutau Flat is located south of Frazier Park. Lebec is the closest town to stay in, and there are some first come first serve
campgrounds off Frazier Park Road heading west out of Lebec.

American Rock Art Research Association 51st annual conference

Wind Wolves Preserve

Wind Wolves Preserve does have free camping. Camping is not being organized by SSAS and the SSAS

Rock Art tour in Mariposa County
Date: April 20, 2024

Description: SSAS will be visiting a petroglyph site located in Mariposa County on the traditional tribal boundaries of
the Southern Sierra Miwuk and the Northern Valley Yokuts. This site also has an ancient astronomical
observation area that was constructed to produce shadow alignments that occur only around the equinox
This trip generally requires one to be in good physical condition. No children under the age of 10, and no
pets.
Bring: People should bring water shoes or boots, snacks and their lunch, and plenty of water. A hat and
sunscreen are recommended. Walking poles with a rubber tip can be helpful.

Wildcat Mountain and Davis Ranch site visit
Date: March 16, 2024
Time: 9 am - 3 pm
Location: Meeting location yet to be determined, probably in Woodlake
Description: Field Trip will be to sites near Woodlake which we refer to as Davis Ranch. It consists of several small sites separated by a few hundred yards. There are several images in red and a few polychromes.
Bring: Participants should plan to wear sturdy hiking boots, long sleeves and long pants as the terrain can be a bit challenging in places and there is some poison oak. Bring snacks, lunch and plenty of water. Consider the outing to be moderately strenuous with up to two miles of walking.

Rocky Hill membership picnic and work party
Date: February 17, 2024

Description: We will be providing tours of the site. Hot dogs and soft drinks provided.
Bring: Feel free to bring potluck and a chair. Bring work gloves and close-toed shoes if you would like to help build burn piles.
